Edge of Expression

In a unique fusion of art, literature, and conservation, a Dorchester-born creative upcycling project is breathing new life into second-hand books while honouring the legacy of British female writers and women’s stories. Through the delicate and intricate craft of fore-edge painting, artist and illustrator Olesia Komarova has transformed pre-loved volumes into stunning works of art—all supporting the Sylvia Townsend Warner statue fundraiser.

A Collaboration of Art and Activism

In partnership with Visible Women UK, Olesia has meticulously restored and adorned a series of second-hand and gifted books with fore-edge paintings. The selection includes books by Tracy Chevalier, Tom Sharpe, and Sarah Waters, as well as a collection of short stories by Sylvia Townsend Warner, whose literary legacy and LGBTQ+ heritage continue to inspire readers today.

Originally from Russia, Olesia’s appreciation for the accessibility of second-hand books in the UK—especially those by queer writers—sparked the idea for this project. In a country where access to such literature was restricted, she was struck by the abundance of extraordinary books waiting to be rediscovered. She restores these books through her artistry and highlights their cultural and historical significance.

The Books Brought Back to Life Are:

1: Remarkable Creatures: by Tracy Chevalier - A Restored Second-Hand Book

The fore-edge illustration for Remarkable Creatures depicts Mary Anning strolling along the Jurassic Coast, her keen eyes scanning the cliffs for fossils. Painted in watercolours and acrylics, the vibrant hues contrast with today’s often grey English skies, transporting viewers to the subtropical climate of the Jurassic period.

2: The Fossil Woman: by Tom Sharpe - A New Book with a Timeless Message

Olesia’s three-part artwork for The Fossil Woman pays tribute to the contributions of palaeontologists and the interconnectedness of all living creatures. The piece invites reflection on our relationship with nature while showcasing one of Anning’s most significant finds—an ichthyosaur. This prehistoric marine reptile reshaped our understanding of the natural world.

3: Short Stories: by Sylvia Townsend Warner - A Restored Second-Hand Book

Adopting a rich diversity of voices, Sylvia’s short stories shed light on the complexity of human nature. The three-part illustration, completed in watercolour and ink, features Sylvia’s portrait with one of her pet cats and a few hidden references to some of Sylvia’s main literary themes.  The fore-edge illustration also features the Visible Women UK abbreviation to commemorate the monument fundraiser project.

4: Fingersmith: by Sarah Waters - A new book gifted by the author

A signed copy of the award-winning gothic story features a three-part ink figurative art graphic illustration depicting the dark aesthetics of Victorian England and celebrating the book’s intricate storyline and gripping twists.

A Literary Auction for a Lasting Legacy

All books in this project have been created for a silent online auction supporting Visible Women UK. It will run from March to the end of May 2025, when we will announce the winners. Proceeds will go to the Sylvia Townsend Warner statue fundraiser. Anyone interested in bidding on these beautiful books should send their bid to visiblewomenuk@gmail.com.

Remember, you can bid more than once. All we ask is that bids start at £30 and that you write clearly in your email which book you are bidding on.

This initiative celebrates the work of groundbreaking female writers and women’s stories by merging artistic craftsmanship with literary heritage. It ensures women's voices are heard, seen, read, and remembered. For those who cherish books, history, and the power of women’s stories, this is an opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind piece of literary art while supporting a meaningful cause.
